The Racer X Fabrication manual shift kit for the 2012+ Chevy Sonic replaces the OEM shift knob and reverse lock out. The OEM shift knob is light, has less than desirable ergonomics and provides poor feedback during shifting. The Racer X shift knob is designed to fit comfortably in your hand, and at about 2” in diameter, is heavier and increases feedback during shifting.

Construction

The shift knob is CNC machined 6061-T6 aluminum and threaded for an M12 x 1.25 thread pitch. The reverse lock out is specifically designed to work with the shift knob and is also CNC machined from 6061-T6 aluminum. Both components are anodized black for a durable finish and the shift knob is laser etched with the 6 speed shift pattern.

OEM Shifter Assembly Note

The manual shift kit requires us to modify the OEM shifter assembly for the threaded shift knob and reverse lock out. Due to this we will either need your OEM shifter or a core. The core charge will be refunded once we receive a good condition OEM shifter assembly.

The shifter is much nicer than the stock plastic one. I already have a short shift kit installed, and this added the weight and feedback that the stock shifter lacks. Bushings, short shifter, and this kit all together make the sonic much more interactive to drive. I can really feel the gear engaging now.
Having the matching lockout collar also makes it look very nice.

The only issue I have with it is the temperature. Here in the Canadian winter I solved that with a kid's size mitten until the heat really comes on.

This shifter feels amazing and I only have two complaints about it. A very minor one is that the black anodized knob gets extremely hot when parked out in the sun. Not a huge deal as it's easily changeable. My main complaint is that the shifter boot doesn't fit as well as I'd like around the reverse lock out. There is not anything keeping it on, so it tends to slip off when going to reverse. This shifter is definitely worth the money and feels way higher quality than the stock one. My stock one couldn't decide if it wanted to be notchy or smooth, so it chose neither. This one adds a notchy characteristic to it and it feels great. It is definitely shorter and feels better in every way. This is my favorite mod for the money for sure.
